Shame on Griffey

I just lost a lot of respect for Ken Griffey Jr.

Did anyone else see this article on MLB.com?

Wow.

Griffey wants his 600th home run ball back, so what did he do? He made a comment about how it isn’t worth that much in order to discourage the fan who caught it from selling it.

“I didn’t break any record, tie any record or anything,” Griffey told MLB.com. “I was the sixth person to hit 590 and 602, too.”

What a lame thing to say. And even if the ball IS worth as little as he claims, then why doesn’t he just keep quiet and bid on it when it goes up for auction? He’s made over $130 million in his career. I think he can afford it.

Meanwhile, when Griffey’s equally lame agent, Brian Goldberg, was asked about the fan (a guy named Joe Scherer) who caught the ball, he had the nerve to say, “He’s got to separate fantasy from reality…I don’t think the dollar value is going to be
anything close to what Joe thinks. This ball didn’t break any records
and it’s not unique.”

If it’s not unique, then why does Griffey want it? What a bunch of tools.

I think Griffey is a washed up star who has done nothing but complain, and doesn’t do anything to help his team, it is a lame way to try to get it back, what a baby!

Originally, I thought he was just trying to be humble about it, but his quote “I’d like to have it but it is what it is,” tells me that he just wants to pay less for it.

Personally, I would have taken the memorabilia and the All-Star game tickets. I would have also asked for tickets to all potential World Series games played in Chicago this year.

If the ball isn’t worth anything like Griffey says, then it should be easy to win the auction.
cubs baseball- You know the Cubs are going to find some way to blow going to the World Series don’t you?

I’m with you Zach. He should pay the “little” amount if he wants the baseball.
Pabs

Zack,
I lost all my respect for Griffey after my trip to the Reds seres in SD. I used to a huge fan of his when I was in Taiwan. He had came to Taiwan long time ago as a baseball ambassador and did a HR derby. However, in person, he is such a horrible human being. He would never ever sign for virtually anyone, under any circumstances(even 6 hours before game time), including kids, women, little girls, handicapped people, elderly. He wouldn’t even acknowledge anyone when people are chearing for him. He just flat out ignores everyone.

I got lucky because there was an official Griffey fan club there from CIN that day. I believe those people paid to be in that club. And he wouldn’t even sweepot for those ppl and intentionally sign autographs that look like crap. And he didn’t sign for everyone in the fan club that day.

If I have that 600ball, I am selling it no question. Griffey treats his fans like crap. He does not deserve the ball. How lame is it that he is willing to make a trade with 10 autographed items. His signed jersey is only worth $525 on mlb shop and signed bat worth $425. Even if I got 10 jerseys, trip to NY plus GU items from his teammates, the value od those is much lower than what could have been gotten in auction.

Ken Griffey needs to make a significant cash offer. Brian Goldberg is a putz. Junior should just bid at the auction. Got my second career Ichiro ball tonight, but it wasn’t on the fly. I’ll take it though.

Leigh

Leigh,
pretty cool pair of shoes you wear that day. I was really impressed(speechless at the time) after seeing you jump for that ball bounced into the beach area last Fri. I can’t stop thinking of Kung Fu Panda ever since. I will probably go to Marlin and Brave series.

When are you goin to NY?

Zack,

Nice Palm Beach article. I think your official Media name should be “Snaggod” as opposed to “BallHawk”. I do believe the BallHawk resides in Chicago on Waveland.
Besides he sells all of his catches and you keep all of yours.
Wierdest thing happened at the COPA yesterday. Brian Fuentes (P) from the Rockies was warming up prior to the game. (A very overcast rainy day BTW). After he finished warming up down the foul line. My busddy asked if he could toss the ball to his teenage son. Fuentes looked at my buddy, looked at his son, then proceeded to wind up and fire the ball in the upper deck seats of the COPA. We all (Crowd Mgrs and fans) looked at each other and said, “What an ***”. Oh well, life goes on.
BTW, for you Cardinals fans out there, Mike Parisi is one of the nicest players I have ever met…..
Off to the COPA,
Mike in Detroit (SnagFan)
(Annual Snag Count for 2008 is 119)

Sammy….

I can’t believe you just compared me to Kung Fu Panda. I don’t know whether to be flattered or punch you. Ha ha. So, you liked that snag, huh? I have my moments. For all of you out there that weren’t there it was a smoked ground rule double with alot of spin on it. I pounced on it like a panda apparently. Glad you liked it Sammy. My new shoes are pretty sweet huh? I’ll have to put a pic of them on here sometime. See you for the Marlins and Braves. Padres are in NY in August. We’ll see about the trip. Can you pay for me? Later…

While I agree with Zack that Junior could’ve handled things better in this situation, I don’t believe that it is fair for you to judge Griffey based on your one experience with him. The reason for his behavior (I somehow doubt it was as bad as you claim) could’ve been related to his personal life or events that occurred that particular day. It’s not fair to judge this man so strongly based on one experience.

ALL of the athletes should buy the balls if they really want them. he should take the trip to NY and sell the ASG tix.

can you bring backpacks like your big one into shea?

can you bring backpacks like your big one into shea?

puck – Yes, backpacks are allowed.

DHBBALL18-
Ouch! Harsh! But yeah…

CUBS BASEBALL-
I hope the Cubs reach the playoffs, at the very least.

JIMDELHOMME-
Yup (to the Griffey part).

PABS-
Amen.

SAMMYWU17-
Wow. I remember when you left a comment a while back about Griffey. Sorry you had such a terrible experience with him.

LEIGH-
Well said. Congrats on EEEEEEEEEE-chiro. King Fu Panda? No comment. :-)

MIKE IN DETROIT-
“Snaggod.” I like it. I’ve been called lots of things. “Sultan of Snag” is still one of my favorites. That’s pretty messed up about about Fuentes. He’s normally really cool. Maybe he was just trying to be playful and funny, but damn…not good.

JFUNK-
Thanks…and I agree with YOU. Anyone can have a bad day and come off being snotty. The thing is, though, that I’ve heard the same thing from numerous collectors over the years about Griffey.

PUCK COLLECTOR-
Big (aka “normal”) backpacks are allowed inside Shea. What a concept.

puck – Yes, backpacks are allowed.

Zack,

Good to see you back in NY snagging!

Question?when you got the bleacher seats at Shea last year, were the bleachers accessible from inside the stadium? In other words, can I get to them by going into the main entrance at 4:35pm? Can you walk around the stadium if you have bleacher seats or are you relegated to just the bleacher section like at YS?

Would appreciate your answers.
Maybe Greg knows???

I Maybe getting these seats through someone.

Brendan

im really pissed right now. it 7:40 and yes the mets yanks game is in the 8th. my uncle left like halfway through the rain dleay, and as soon as we got inot the car, they started again. we got there ate like 3:!5, and they were removing the cage, so to my surprise, they took BP. the seats were field box 157, and in CitiField they’ll be good, but at Sghea they sucked cuz they didnt face the batter, but they faced towards center field, so it was really hard to see.

Oh, and Chad the ballboy, throws like a girl, and gave the ball to the same people like every inning

Brendan — Yeah, if you have a bleacher ticket, it will scan at any gate, and then you can just enter the bleachers through the walkway behind the LF bullpen by showing your ticket. (You can also enter through the bleacher entrance, but from what I’ve observed, that doesn’t open as early.) And, on top of that, they’ll let you go back into the main part of the stadium if you want. They don’t check tickets going in that direction.

ken griffey jr should be ashamed of himself…he doesnt make enough money playing the game then endorsements then bonuses for making the all-star game or something then add from sponserships and from memorabilia…he should be ashamed of himself…if he wants it that bad and thinks that its not worth that much then he should go out and pay the few grand that he thinks its worth in an auction…his agent is the absolute definition of *******…i would expect much better from griffey…and there have only been 6 players now to 600…how in the world does he think that that ball isnt worth much? he and his agent both need to get their heads out off their a$$e$

YAHOO WROTE AN ARTICLE ON YOU

YOU ARE ON YAHOO

ac: can you link it?

nvrmind that last comment, cuz the article that Yahoo has is just the article that the AP wrote

also i was wondering are you going to buy a brick for the citi feild fanwalk

BRENDAN-
I was gonna answer, but Greg beat me to it.

GREG-
Thanks for answering.

PUCK COLLECTOR-
Your comment about Chad literally made me laugh out loud. (No offense, ladies.)

JONELI24-
Thanks for weighing in.

AC-
Cool. Thanks for the heads up. I actually didn’t know the story had appeared on Yahoo until I read your comment.

DARRON-
Nah, no brick for me.

i thought you would get one and put Zack Hample
baseball collector
http://www.zackhample.com

Him I got a mets comm ball from seattle, they were in NY before SD

I didn’t read all of the comments above, but I think Griffey should just buy the ball off the guy. Like you said, its worth something, and if Grif wants it, he should pay for it. Isn’t that what the rest of us do?
(Oh boy, my boyhood idol…a game-used ball? OK here’s 1k for the ball…etc)
He’s just being cheap. In fact, if he would’ve put the bounty on the ball, the PREDETERMINED amount would’ve been enough to get the ball to him. (personally I would’ve said 25K).
That would’ve built up a huge EVENT (like the Wonka tickets) and everyone would have been happy.
Instead its going to court and no one will be happy.

Sad
