Stuart Hample, 1926-2010

This will probably come as a shock to many people who read this blog: my father, Stuart Hample, died five days ago at the age of 84. He was diagnosed with cancer three months ago, and unfortunately his health deteriorated quickly. I’m happy to say, though, that he was never in any physical pain, and given the fact that I live just six blocks from my parents’ place, he and I spent lots of meaningful time together right up until the end. I don’t feel like getting into any other details, so please don’t ask questions. Also, although it might go against your instincts, I would prefer NOT to receive any emails, calls, cards, flowers, etc. Some people need that, but it’s actually not helpful at all for me. Other than that, the New York Times ran a sizable obituary about my father earlier today. Here’s the link, and here’s a screen shot of it:

Here’s the version that ran in the actual paper:

Sorry to hear about that Zack.

RIP Mr. Hample. You will be missed by all.

I haven’t commented on here in at least a year, though I still read you regularly, all the way from Japan. I was really shocked and sad to read this post, though. My father died of cancer almost two years ago; I guess we were “lucky” in that he got about 7-8 months from his diagnosis, so I was able to fly back and spend a few weeks with him, and didn’t really feel like we had anything left unfinished, or anything I hadn’t gotten to tell him. My brother didn’t, and it tore him up for ages, that he’d never gotten that final phone call or final visit.

There’s never a “good” way to lose a parent, of course, and it’s always a shock no matter how much you know it’s coming… but it sounds like your father really led a full and happy life and is leaving behind a wonderful legacy of books that will make people laugh for generations to come. Which is about as close to immortality as you can get.

Anyway, take care of yourself, and good luck getting through this difficult time. My thoughts are with you too.

Zack –

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I know how tough it is to lose someone to cancer. At 16 I lost my father to cancer. Pretty much the toughest time of my life. Just know that you have a great group of friends around you at home and also all of us in the Ballhawking community!

Meeting your dad at Dodger stadium was something I will always remember. It’s a tough adjustment moving on but the one thing that you obviously know is that I am sure your dad is very proud of you especially since you are following in his footsteps as a writer!

Z-Man-Very sorry to hear about your pops brotha. If you need ANYTHING…You know how to reach me. Take care my friend…D

Sorry for your loss and the situation I put you in earlier. It is important that those that have passed never be forgotten. However, one must not die along with them. They must not lose sight of what lies ahead and keep moving forward. It seems you have done both well.
