Fan mail + essay

I’ve received lots of fan mail over the years (as well as some hate mail), and while I don’t make a habit of posting it here on my blog, there are times when it simply has to be done.

Several days ago, I got THE nicest letter of all time. Let’s start with a look at the envelope:

As you can see on the upper left, the sender’s name is Tyler, and I’ve bleeped out his street address. My address, meanwhile, is here for everyone to see. It’s my work address, where the Argosy Book Store is located. (I blogged about the store in my previous entry, remember?) If you want to send me anything in the mail, send it here, but just to be safe, write the address like this:

Argosy Book Store
Attn: Zack Hample
116 East 59th Street
New York, NY 10022

Anyway, the envelope contained a single sheet of paper. This was written on one side . . .

. . . and this appeared on the other:

In a word: wow.
I am truly flattered.
High-fives, fist-bumps, hand-shakes, bro-hugs, and THANKS to Tyler.

I actually wrote several journal entries about you in my ninth grade English class last year. Haha, it is a great thing to write about and I know many people look up to you.

I agree! Zack, you are so good to the kids! Just keep doing what you love! Nettie

BLAKE THE SNAKE-
Niiiiice. Back in the early 1990s, when I was first getting started with ballhawking, I remember looking up to a much older guy at Yankee Stadium named Artie. He was awesome in every way — so kind and fun to talk to. It’s nice to be able to return the favor all these years later to some of the younger, up-and-coming ballhawks.

NETTIE WOOD-
Thanks! Great to hear from you.

But did he write about you in Spanish is the real question. I wrote about you in the placement “test” to get into AP Spanish. I still haven’t taken AP Spanish. But seriously, I don’t want to stray the attention any further from Mr. Tyler To…(Wait, am I allowed to write his last name? I feel like that defeats the purpose o your bleep.) Anyway, way to go, Double T. That was great what you did.

Way to go, Tyler! You picked a terrific role model. Just don’t try to catch anything dropped from a helicopter until you’re older.

What an awesome letter and as always an awesome post. Good things happen to good people and Zack is all of that and more. A true role model. YOU DA MAN!!!!!

Wow his dad couldn’t be his role model like most people? Instead a person that still hasn’t grown up has to be one?

MATEO-
Did you ever tell me about the Spanish thing? If so, I forgot. (Sorry!) Not sure about Double T’s last name. I wasn’t sure if I was allowed to reveal it.

LIZ MERRY-
Shux. :-)

GEORGE-
Thanks.

Vroom vroom! lol.

No, I didn’t tell you about it. I kind of forgot about it myself, since I didn’t end up taking the class, until this entry. I like the .gif.

KSLO69-
Heh.

MATEO-
Well then.

EVERYONE-
I’m going to post a new entry this evening.

Thanks for putting it up Zack

DOUBLE T!!!
You’re welcome. Thanks for writing it in the first place.

Zac-
What’s your opinion on the AL MVP debate? Old school traditionalist or progressive realist?

Zack, you’re always my hero.

CHASICLE-
My instinct is to give it to Miggy. His team made the playoffs. He played the full season. And he won the effin’ Triple Crown. I don’t know enough about WAR and all those cray new stats to out any value in them — but that doesn’t mean they’re wrong. In fact, they may be totally right, but I would need someone to explain them. I can’t STAND people who shoot down facts/logic simply because it contracts how they FEEL, or because they don’t understand it. I’m saying how I feel, but I’m open to having my opinion changed.

LEON-
Was that meant to be “von”? And are you commenting from Asia?! I hope you’re having fun, and I miss you.

@Tyler– Small world! (I live over by Papio Bay.) You have SO got to stop by and say Hi to us Berm Bums out in right field at those Chasers games! (Email nspo at cox dot net, and we can talk about it.)

Sorry, Zack, for hijacking…

No apology necessary.
