HAWAII — Day 1

I keep hearing all this chatter about the Superbowl and Spring Training, but . . . no thanks. My mind is elsewhere. I’m in Hawaii.

The trip started yesterday with an 11-hour flight from New York City to Honolulu. Here’s a photo that I took toward the end of the flight:

A few hours earlier, I’d played a game of Scrabble against my mom. Here’s what the board looked like at the end:

I won’t tell you the final score because that’d just be mean. I will say, though, that I played INSUReD for 72 points and followed that by playing QUICK for 69.

Anyway, yeah, I’m here in Hawaii with my mom and half-sister Martha. They’ve both been here before — my mom was only here for a day in 1960 — but it’s the first time for me. The three of us, you may recall, went to Japan last year and visited Barbados the year before. If we all take another trip in 2014, I’ve suggested that we go to Syria or Australia.

Look what I saw in the Honolulu airport:

Martha and my mom and I sat around for a couple hours before taking a super-short flight to Maui. This was the view as we were coming in for a landing:

Then we rented a car and drove for an hour . . .

. . . to the condo that we’ve rented for the next few days. Here’s the interior:

It was dark by the time we arrived, and we were tired as hell, so our only adventure involved grocery shopping.

More soon . . .

Have a *great* time, Zack!! You’re lucky to be away from this insanely cold weather we’ve been having up here in the northeast! Don’t get me wrong, I love the cold and the snow, but I would *love* to take a trip to Hawaii for a week or 2!

Maui is my favorite Hawaiian island. If you get a chance, I highly recommend you try shave ice, and you’re in luck that the best one I’ve ever had (I used to live in Hawaii) is on Maui. It’s called Ululani’s with 2 locations in Lahaina and 1 in Kahului.

If you need any tips of things to do, places to see, and food to eat, let me know, and I’ll email a list I created for friends who went there last year.

This is whale watching season, and you can see them sometimes from the shore, so while driving along the shoreline, have someone be on the lookout! Aloha!

Aloha Zack Get your flippers on and swim on down here to Australia. It’s Barbados , Hawaii , Syria and the US all rolled into one relaxed , friendly and safe place. We have baseball from November to February [ you would probably be sick of it by then and it's fairly AAA ] and all the venomous creatures you can step on and swim into [ kidding ] . Forget about the bush fires and floods we’ve been having. If you’re sick of -11 temps , it’s the place to be. All this for the price of 19 hours on a plane if you go via LAX. Fairly provincial compared to Times Square or Hollywood but that’s the point – no crowds and room to move and breathe.

BRIAN-
Thanks! I know I’m lucky, and I’m enjoying every moment . . .

JAMES LEE-
Thanks for the recommendation. Shave ice will most certainly be had — possibly even this afternoon (it’s only 1:33pm here now) before dinner. If you’re willing to share the list, that’d be great. Martha has already planned a bunch of stuff, but I’m sure there’s still time to squeeze in a few bonus activities. Is there a certain time of day when the whales are more likely to be seen?

RAY BURTON-
With my luck, I’d try to step on a venomous creature . . . but I’d miss, and it’d dodge my foot and scurry up my leg and bite my balls. I wouldn’t mind a 19-hour flight if I could plug in my laptop.

Check your email. Whales can be seen any time of the day; we saw them in the morning and afternoon. Interesting to still be in the US, but have such time difference. When I lived there, Super Bowl was an afternoon affair…

Nice trip. I love Hawaii. I’ve been there a few times. We usually stay at the Waldorf Astoria property on Maui. It’s wonderful there. You should check it out for lunch or something. That’s an awfully long flight from NYC. Glad I live in CA sometimes. Have fun on your trip. P.S. I don’t know about the Syria trip. You might want to rethink.

You lucky dog! Have fun! Baseball’s right around the corner!! Nettie

Ahh Maui. I read “The Baseball” on the beach there this past summer. I recommend Napili bay (not too far from Lahaina) if you’re on that side of the island. Good snorkeling and best of all, there are no high rises in sight.

Na Koa Ikaika Maui Baseball Spring Training doesn’t start until March. You’re missing Eri Yoshida by mere weeks! Oh well, I’m not even sure she is signed with them for 2013. Have a great time!

JAMES LEE-
You are the MAN!!

LEIGH BARRATT-
You’ve been everywhere. (Except Syria, right?)

NETTIE-
Baseball has a way of creeping up on me. It didn’t used to.

CONNOR-
Very cool about the book. Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll mention it to the ladies and see what they think.

LIZ MERRY-
So it goes. Can you find out if/where she’s playing this season?

You know, I can’t find people to play Scrabble with anymore. My mom and I got into an argument over my use of “UM” as an acceptable word. She didn’t think it was okay to use; I insisted and even after she challenged me and lost (it’s in the Scrabble dictionary, after all), she quit and won’t play with me anymore. Now I’m stuck with random people on Words with Friends.

I have looked, but haven’t found anything about 2013 yet. Will let you know as soon as I find out.

Andrew, Words with Friends eliminates those silly arguments. Plus you can have a bunch of games going at once. I am CAMetgirl on WWF if you’d like to play me.

ANDREW-
I’ve gone through this with countless people under various circumstances. I simply tell them, “So, let me get this straight — the fact that *you* don’t know a word means it doesn’t exist?” Even the most unreasonable people usually realize that they’re being unreasonable.

LIZ-
Excellent.

I cannot confirm or deny that I’ve ever been in Damascus, Syria. I just can’t talk about it. You should still rethink it though. Australia is the ticket…..

You mysterious son of a bitch.

Amman, Jordan too. LOL. Dude….Sydney in 2014? I’m down.

Let’s do it.
